The Samaritan Woman

“The Samaritan Woman” was made for the Forgotten Women of the Bible exhibition.

The bible has been crucial in shaping western ideas, philosophy, art and literature, according to Dr. Bruce Meyers, who teaches “The five essential texts,” at the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies. As literature informs so much of my work, I became curious as to how the stories of the bible might shape our thinking. The exhibition was two years in the making and during that time, I became immersed in these women’s lives. We have so much to learn from their stories.

For example, in the story of the Samaritan woman we see race issues and prejudice. Jesus spoke to this woman, which was shocking to his disciples because she was a woman and because she was of mixed race.

The short passage has meaningful insights. The inside text in this vessel is from John 4:27:  "The disciples returned about this time and were surprised to find Jesus talking with a woman."
